Why aren't items in Applegate's Natural line made from animals raised on GMO-free feed?
We understand there is confusion and concern behind this question and wanted to clarify it for our consumers.
Organic feed (non-GMO) is much more expensive than its conventional counterpart, which is one reason why organic meat and poultry carry a higher price at the supermarket. At the present time, organic meat constitutes less than 1% of meat sales in the US. In light of that fact, farmers - even ones who employ much-better-than-conventional practices like the ones who supply our Naturals line - would go out of business if they relied solely on selling to people who are willing to pay for organic meat. Furthermore, there is simply not enough organic, non-GMO feed available in the current market to supply all the farmers we source from.
For all these reasons, our Organic products are indeed the only ones that are sure to be made from animals raised without GMO feed.
